No Cumbia Without Forest
2020
Using a composition of 3D imagery, landscape footage, and sound, the six-channel video installation creates a sensory experience that explores the relationship between the dry tropical forest and the music of Cumbia, a Caribbean rhythm originating in Colombia.
The music of the Caribbean region, including genres such as cumbia, porro, gaita, and bullerengue, is intimately connected to the landscape, as the instruments are crafted from forest materials: the gaita flute is made from cactus wood, beeswax, and duck feathers; maracas are crafted from totumo and capacho seeds; and the Caribbean drums—the llamador, the alegre, and the tambora—are carved from banco wood.
