Archeology of Sky #3: Architecture and space
2023
Archeology of the Sky #3 series focuses on creating realtime sound installations that repond to analog weather data embeded in wood structures in architectural spaces. It is an invitation to embody atmosphere as a sculpting force of our materiality.
Archeology of the Sky is an ongoing sound art series exploring wood as a memory device that allows the listener to hear past climatic conditions as documented in tree rings. By circulating water from the soil to the sky, trees become both a conduit and a record of climate information, and thus we are constantly surrounded by climate records in the places we live, work and play. This piece uses principles of dendroclimatology, or the study of tree rings, to represent variations in color and width of the rings as sound waves using a color sensor coded by Macia. It utilizes a V-Slot Mini V Linear Actuator, a type of linear motion tracker, programmed with an Arduino stepper motor. The sound art allows the listener to hear the climate in the materials around them, rendering a celebration of sound and atmosphere.
