MONTES DE MARIA EL CARIBE QUE NO ES BOSQUE ES COSTA
MONTES DE MARIA EL CARIBE QUE NO ES BOSQUE ES COSTA 2020 Palacio de la Proclamacion Cartagena After presenting two exhibition projects focused on regions of Colombia where efforts toward sustainable development and the substitution of illicit crops are underway—(in 2017, at the Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá, an exhibition on Cajamarca, a region that rejected mining and chose to preserve its role as Colombia’s agricultural pantry; and in 2018, a project highlighting cacao production in Tumaco)—Crepes & Waffles now turns its attention to a broader region, one marked by multiple complexities and opportunities: the Montes de María.
THE CARIBBEAN THAT IS NOT COAST, BUT FOREST
This exhibition seeks to give visibility to the issues affecting this region, presenting the work of artists alongside the voices of local actors. Some works were created during short-term residencies in the Montes de María, while others pre-existed but bear witness to a situation that has unfolded over time.
The exhibition reveals different facets of this region, rich in both environment and culture: the historical causes, impacts, and lingering traces of guerrilla and paramilitary violence (Ulianov Chalarka, Juan Manuel Echavarría, Cristo Hoyos, David Bohórquez); the territory’s extraordinary agrobiodiversity (Liliana Sánchez); the beauty and complexity of its landscapes, people, and traditions (María Isabel Rueda); and the majesty of its legendary trees such as the macondo, whose name inspired one of the most mythical places in world literature (Leyla Cárdenas).
The exhibition also includes an immersive video exploring the relationship between the forest and the music of the region, and a space where visitors may taste ice pops made with local products, alongside a seasonal menu featured in Crepes & Waffles restaurants.
