DULCE TUMACO 2018 BOGOTA “What use are cartridges in battle? I always carry chocolate instead.” —George Bernard Shaw, Arms and the Man
Tumaco conceals a unique potential that has remained invisible until now. The port and its surrounding region have long been marked by poverty, corruption, and violence; yet at the same time, it is one of the areas of greatest biological and cultural richness in Colombia. The region is home to a remarkable diversity of fine-aroma cacao, native to this land and recognized among the best in the world.
Extended Description Local Afro-Colombian organizations—such as CORTEPAZ and the Consejo Comunitario Bajo Mira—buy, ferment, dry, and market native regional cacao, sustaining ancestral crops that resist disappearance in the face of expanding illicit cultivation. Within a market economy, the survival of these traditions is possible only if communities are able to sell their product at fair prices, offering an alternative to the coca trade.
In alliance with Cacao Hunters, Crepes & Waffles developed both an ice cream and a hot beverage made with Tumaco cacao, guaranteeing farmers a stable market over time. Today, these products connect you directly with the communities that cultivate some of the world’s finest cacao, so that Tumaco may be recognized for the sweetness of chocolate rather than the bitterness of processed coca.
This exhibition seeks to shed light on the challenges surrounding cacao and the region of Tumaco through works by artists who approach the subject from diverse perspectives. Some of these pieces were created during short-term residencies in Tumaco itself. The exhibition also includes testimonies from local inhabitants, whose ancestral knowledge and lived experiences speak to the complex realities of this territory.
