CLIMATE RECORDS
2 CHANNEL VIDEO INSTALLATION

The work explores wood as a memory device that stores both present and past skies. Drawing on principles of dendroclimatology—the science of reconstructing past climate conditions through tree rings—variations in color and width are interpreted as sound waves by a color sensor, creating a space where listeners can attune to past climates through sound.

The installation begins with an initial collection of tree records, made from different species of found wood gathered in Albany, NY, during the arts residency Listening to the Sky at Arts Letters & Numbers. These records invite interaction, offering the possibility to explore and compare diverse climatic histories rendered audible.

Tree trunks are directly implicated in the formation of clouds and the behavior of weather patterns, as they circulate water from soil to sky. This circulation leaves an analog imprint within the wood, providing the opportunity to bridge timelines between present, past, and future climates. In regarding wood as memory, the work raises questions about the materiality that surrounds us and its intimate relationship with weather.
